Using the Nucleus3G Telecoil

LINN TEARNEY-Cochlear Americas

How to make the most of the telecoil:

Many of us who have used the ESPrit or ESPrit 22 BTE processors received a telecoil accessory cable in the Accessory Kit. The ESPrit 3G and soon, the ESPrit 3G for the Nucleus 22, feature the cochlear implant industry’s first built-in telecoil. With the optional telecoil accessory for Nucleus body-worn processors, nearly every Nucleus recipient has access to a telecoil.

You might be asking yourself, “What can I do with a telecoil?” Some of you might already know that many phones are telecoil compatible and placing the phone next to the activated telecoil (or T-coil) will allow you to hear on the phone….but that’s not all! Keep reading for the whole scoop!

Here are some practical uses for better hearing your telecoil:

Use your telecoil at the theater. Most movie theaters use infra-red or an induction loop which can be used with a neckloop or telecoil compatible headphones. You can borrow the equipment you will need at the theater. Connect the telecoil accessory or switch to T on ESPrit 3G. A neckloop or telecoil compatible headphones used with the system receiver and your telecoil will allow you to hear the movie through magnetic induction. If the theater has a large room loop, simply sit in the looped area and connect or switch to the telecoil setting.

A wireless infrared personal listening system can be used at home watching TV or listening to the stereo. It is also compatible in thousands of theaters, cinemas, and other public buildings that use 95 kHz infrared systems. Take the receiver with you and enjoy the show.

  • Neckloops can be connected to portable audio components such as a CD, cassette or MP3 player. The sound is delivered through the telecoil.
  • Loop your living room to hear TV and group conversations better. Small room loop systems are available from specialty stores.
  • Telecoil compatible headphones can be purchased from many commercial electronics sources. It may be necessary to try the headphones with your telecoil to make sure it is compatible. Closed headphones with a large concave earpiece provide the best fit and are comfortable placed over the external CI components.
  • HATIS – a small easy-to-use accessory that allows hands-free use of a cellular or cordless telephone. The Hatis earpiece is placed next to the telecoil and the attached cable is connected to a standard headphone jack on a cellular or cordless phone. Eliminates distortion and interference present when some phones are held close to the cochlear implant components.
