Kathy Allen is the Central Region Consumer Advocate for Cochlear Americas. She will share some very valuable information on how to enhance the benefits that you receive from your cochlear implant. Included in this presentation will be information concerning the use of assistive listening devices (ALD’s) with your cochlear implant – as well as an opportunity to learn some new “low tech” solutions to enhance your listening skills. Attendees will be asked to share their own tips and tricks on how they have enhanced their listening skills with the Cochlear Implants. The presentation is geared for consumers with a cochlear implant in general, not specifically the Nucleus product. Real Time Captioning will be provided courtesy of the Bureau for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Cochlear Americas. Please bring a treat to share during the social time following the presentation.

The WI Cochlear Implant Chapter meeting is open to anyone, who currently has a cochlear implant, is considering an implant or is a friend or family member of in either if these situations. Even if you are simply interested in learning more about the cochlear implant, we hope you will join us for this meeting!

Next meeting date: To be announced.

WI CIAI Chapter Coordinator Message

Hello everyone!

It is hard to believe March is almost upon us and soon we will be thinking of shamrocks and the infamous Corned Beef and Cabbage meal that is associated with St. Paddy’s Day!

Forgive the late notice, as I have been rather busy with family medical issues since our last meeting. Currently I am on family leave caring for my husband who recently had total knee replacement surgery. I expect to be back to work in early March.

I am very excited about the program we have lined up for March 15th. This is one of the requested topics members suggested. I am thrilled to have been able to bring in an excellent presenter for this topic. Everyone will benefit from this presentation topic, no matter what brand Cochlear Implant you have or are considering. We are most fortunate to have access to Kathy Allen for her knowledge on this topic. In addition, I hope that all of you who have developed your own strategies for enhancing your listening skills, or if you use a device that you found to have helped in challenging environments – will bring these to share with the rest of our members.

You all will recall the concept of a “travelling” meeting in addition to our regular meetings at Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Brookfield. I have had several inquiries for a meeting up north, so will be looking for members to consider sharing their experiences in a meeting somewhere near Marshfield later this spring. Additionally, Madison area folks are requesting a meeting over their way – which I would like to accommodate this fall sometime. I have a short list of possible meeting topics that we will review and prioritize for the rest of 2003.

I look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks! Do bring a friend or anyone you know who is considering the cochlear implant – this promises to be an excellent meeting!

Warmest regards to you all –

Carol Burns
